Photo Bracelets: Beauty And Memories All In Your Wrist

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Photo bracelets are a thing of the modern century, having been created as a result of advances in photography and the unchanging appeal of jewelry to people. The presence of a loved ones picture on your arm makes that piece of jewelry endearing to some.

Bracelets have been around since the ancient times. They adorned many a persons arms, and are nearly universal in their use and appeal. Sometimes they were adorned for spiritual and religious purposes, using them in rituals and everyday life to ward off evil spirits. Ancient bracelets were designed in the artistic styles of the day, sometimes putting the symbols of a societys gods, goddesses, and other deities to aid them in their lives. During a dignitarys death, it is normal to include the personal jewelry set of the dead official in the coffin, and bracelets were common items to include.

Even in the times of antiquity, bracelets were as varied in design as they are right now. The upper class peoples in a city or society normally wore bracelets made from precious metals like gold, bronze, silver, or a mix of these metals. Less sophisticated societies opted for cruder materials such as bones, wood, teeth, stones, or other unusual objects.

If precious stones and material were abundant, these were used to decorate arms too. Chinese often had jade in the jewelry and especially their bracelets. Pearls and shells decorated the forearms of ancient seafarers. Solid bracelets called bangles, made out of carefully cut stones, were used as ornaments in Africa and Asian countries.

Bracelets were not made only with decoration in mind. Oftentimes, people can indicate a persons status through the type of bracelet that he/she wears. Others used uniform bracelets to indicate membership of a certain caste or level of society. Just like other types of jewelry pieces, bracelets served to communicate status, identity, and personality, and most were not made just for showing off.

Today, we basically have the same reasons for wearing bracelets and related jewelry. Yet as technology grew, people found new uses for jewelry and bracelets, in particular. When photography began to evolve and people were taking pictures and portraits of themselves, it made sense to carry these pictures around and show them off to friends.

Another aspect of this need was taking root. People were beginning to appreciate the value of preserving the person through photographs, and instead of always keeping them in their own living rooms, they took the pictures with them wherever they went, intent on keeping emotional connected with them. This was more significant when the person in the portrait had died, or was separated far away from the wearer.

Photo bracelets became a preferred vehicle of bringing picture keepsakes along with them, even today. We still love to bring around treasured photos of our loved ones. It is like declaring to the people that this person in the portrait is precious to me. Bracelets have provided the convenience and handiness of making people remember. Photo bracelets are integral pieces of jewelry to many people since they serve this particular need.
